How members of the National Association of Women in Construction are giving back this holiday season
The National Association of Women in Construction was built on the notion of supporting others. And now that the association has grown to serve women in construction in over 115 chapters, NAWIC is able to provide support to their local community members all across the country. This year has been particularly hard for many families, and the needs of those who are suffering are often greater. We are so proud of our family of women in construction who have stepped up to the plate to support their neighbors.
Read on to see how women in construction throughout our chapters are getting involved in spreading some extra cheer for families in need this year.
Louisville Chapter
The women in construction of the Louisville Chapter have worked with the Family Scholar House for five years. Every holiday season, the chapter comes together to take part in the Adopt a Family program. The chapter even shops together and shares a meal afterward to make this a special outing for their members.
Greater Sioux Falls Chapter
Chapter #237 in Greater Sioux Falls continued their tradition of partnering with their local Boys & Girls Club. During this time of great need throughout the country, the Boys & Girls Club has helped to provide basic resources for struggling youth. This year, the chapter collected socks as part of a sock drive organized by the club.
Santa Clara Chapter
Members of the Santa Clara chapter are sponsoring the Unity Care Youth Christmas program this year. This organization helps provide care for transitional age foster youth. Each donation goes towards providing a gift for the young kids living in the housing program. In addition to gifts, donations also help to give the kids within the program a holiday meal and a Christmas tree.
South Sound Chapter
Hope and healing are two gifts that many could use after this difficult year. And the members of the South Sound chapter have partnered with an organization that can provide both. The Family Renewal Shelter is dedicated to supporting the well-being of domestic violence victims. Through the chapter's partnership this year, the group is helping to build new lives.
Eugene Chapter
The members of NAWIC's Eugene chapter take part in an annual drive that benefits a selected family from a local shelter. Managed by board member Cary Kuvaas, this group of women in construction makes sure their selected family has everything they need for holiday gifts and more. This year the group has exceeded all of their goals for their family, which includes a young boy along with his uncle and grandmother. The members were able to provide gift cards, fishing and camping equipment, toys, sheets, towels, pillows, and several other household items.
Alaska Chapter
Hunger is a great concern for many families this year, and the Alaska chapter members wanted to address the issue head on. Partnering with a local shelter, the members were able to adopt a local family for the holidays, providing them with a Christmas meal and presents to open on Christmas morning. In addition to helping this particular family, the group also collected items for Claire House, a housing program for mothers and children who are facing homelessness.
Tri-Cities Chapter
The members of the Tri-Cities chapter in Washington are hoping to inspire more women in construction this year. In true NAWIC fashion, the chapter purchased and put together eight tool bags for Habitat for Humanity. These bags are to be gifted to the Habitat's newest homeowners when they receive the keys to their home. Branded with the NAWIC logo as a friendly reminder of support, the tool bags included a picture hanging kit, a cordless drill and bit set, a screwdriver set, wrenches, pliers, a hammer, a tape measurer, and a level.
These are only a few of the ways that our members are showing their generosity this holiday season. It's important that we continue providing support to our community members and showing that there's nothing women in construction can't do – especially when we come together for a greater cause. The National Association of Women in Construction now has over 117 local chapters across the United States, which makes it very easy for female builders to connect with our network of professionals. Membership is open to all construction women and NAWIC is able to provide members with amazing resources to help them gain confidence in their abilities and develop more leadership skills.
